Your consumer unit — the fuse board — is the heart of your home's electrical system. It protects every circuit and, crucially, protects you. But many homes across Bristol and North Somerset still have units that are decades out of date. Here are the warning signs that yours may need upgrading.
If your board uses rewireable fuses — the kind with actual fuse wire you replace by hand — it's a clear sign of an ageing installation. Modern consumer units use circuit breakers and RCBOs that react far faster and far more reliably to faults.
An RCD (Residual Current Device) cuts the power in a fraction of a second if it detects a fault that could cause an electric shock. If your board has no RCD, you're missing one of the most important safety features in a modern home. This is one of the most common reasons we recommend an upgrade.
Old wooden-backed boards and cast-iron switch fuses date back many decades. As well as being well past their best, they don't meet current standards, which now require non-combustible (metal) enclosures for consumer units in domestic properties.
Any sign of heat — a burning smell, discolouration, scorch marks around the board, or a buzzing noise — needs investigating immediately. These can indicate loose connections or overloaded circuits, both of which are serious fire risks. If you notice this, stop using the affected circuit and call an electrician straight away. The occasional trip is normal. But if your breakers trip regularly for no obvious reason, it points to an underlying fault, an overloaded circuit, or a board that's struggling to cope with modern electrical demand. Proper fault finding will get to the root of it.
Planning an EV charger, an electric shower, a hot tub or a big kitchen renovation? Older boards often can't safely support these additional loads. Upgrading the consumer unit at the same time keeps everything safe and compliant.
If a recent EICR returned C2 or C3 observations relating to the consumer unit — no RCD protection, a combustible enclosure, or insufficient circuit protection — an upgrade is the proper fix.
